Respect the different types of game players and try to satisfy them all. Don't call them users, and don't waste their time with crash bugs and poor quality.

Be respectful of the effort people have put into their work, especially if they are new to modding. There are some great examples of how to provide constructive criticism gently by the mod staff in the Archives.

Be respectful of the HW2 modders who came before us. They are the ones that enable use to do great things. Use search and tact when posting on Tanis Shipyards - http://forums.relicnews.com/forumdisplay.php?f=72

Be respectful to the owners of the Engine and the IP. We don't support illegal software, downloads, etc. No more old vs. new flamewars or flamewars in general please! Trolls will not be fed.

Be respectful to other BSG Mods. We are all in a very similar boat. Engaging in trolling, spam, flamewars, bashing, etc. reflects poorly on the whole mod team.

Be respectful to each other. I'm only human, but I try to not have fun at other peoples expense. It isn't fun for them. It doesn't foster an open environment when it isn't safe to ask simple questions. When the questions are simple you probably have a lot of them. IRC is the perfect place for that - http://www.hw2bsg.org/wiki/index.php...Installing_IRC

Given how open Relic and the Homeworld 2 modding community is, not running the mod as an open source project just didn't feel right to me.

Relic's support of the Modding Community in general is wonderful. Relic's Open House was a blast! I can be seen in the background here:
More pics and videos are available.

The Homeworld 2 Modders Community really benefits from it's openness. So much work has gone into making HW2 moddable over the past few years it is mind numbing. It's fun being able to participate and contribute to it.

Many of the mod staff didn't know anything about modding when they started. One of the things we really didn't know is the vast amount of work it takes.

Once you understand the scale it is obvious that you need a team. Being open helps the mod staff by training the future mod staff. We hope to further that training with our Wiki - http://www.hw2bsg.org/wiki.

Be open to opportunities. So far we have been able to avoid most either / or choices. And find the space between these either / or choices can lead to exciting things. Being able to easily maintain a version for OS X came out of looking to satisfy two seemingly conflicting goals. Still more is to come. Keep your eyes open!

I grew up a hardcore gamer, I played everything, often played it well, and certainly played it long. In effect I have been modding from almost the very start, as many of the games that "came out" when I first started playing computer games where printouts you had to type in yourself.

For several years after university I was able to remain a hardcore gamer, but someplace between seriously contributing to the IT industry and forming my own business I became a more causal gamer. Not that I necessarily play causal games, I don't, but the number of titles I faithful play has certainly decreased. For me a number of titles dropped off the list simply because I knew I didn't have the time to finish them, while I still miss those titles, it just isn't fun for me to play them the way the game designers wanted me too.

I've carried this attitude over into the mod. The most obvious example would be the very high starting resources a player can choose. If a player wants a challenge, they can choose to have a challenge, by lowering their starting resources. If the player's challenge is with time, then they can choose higher resources. I want to allow the players to be able to choose what is fun for themselves.

Designing games is fun, though the amount of learning and work required can be overwhelming. Learning can be fun, if the learning curve is gentile enough that you can accomplish something without having to learn everything before you start. The mod team has been putting a lot of work into our wiki in hopes of making it fun for people to learn how to mod. As well as devoting countless hours answering modders-to-be's questions.

For me part of the fun in designing is creating a experience of immersion into the universe. This has contributed to my drive to create canon missions. Though another fun part is to go beyond canon, the trick is to go beyond, but not so far beyond as to make suspension of belief hard. Given the size of the BSG Universe, we have plenty of room for more fun.

Work can actually be fun too. And this mod has been a labor of love. When I work with a team and we produce something that no single team member could do on their own, to me takes all the fun I have mentioned above and doubles the dose.

At the very first it was my mission to participate in the HW2 modding community. I wanted to continue in that open tradition of building HW2 modding community knowledge.

My hope was that along the way I would gain some professional insight into the Game Industry and maybe a team would form so there would be a chance at a real mod release. We certainly are getting close we just need more help ;)

What a fun ride it has been. Many people have contributed, but a few just keep coming back and I always look forward to working with them. I have particular respect for our Razors:
